Book Review: Saving Mr. Terupt by Rob Buyea

The Mr. Terupt book series has become one of my favorite series for young readers. My parents are now reading the series due to my enthusiasm! We are not the target audience for these books which is a testament to the engaging plot and compelling characters. We enjoy seeing into the minds of students, remembering our own middle school days, and the teachers who inspired us. They are both teachers, so that contributes to their interest in this series.

The third installment does not disappoint, and seventh grade has a lot in store for the seven Terupt alumni: Anna, Danielle, Jeffrey, Jessica, Lexie, Luke, and Peter. Seventh grade brings puppy love and of course, unexpected challenges. This year, the school budget is being cut and new teachers’ jobs are in jeopardy – including the beloved Mr. Terupt. The seven friends also begin having romantic feelings towards one another. A harmless game of spin the bottle goes wrong, leading the friends to split up and stop talking! A school election brings them back together, and they must join forces in attempt to save the best teacher they’ve ever had. They must help one another overcome family challenges, like cancer, diabetes, and pre-term labor. We are also introduced to some new middle school teachers who make an impact. Buyea succeeds at making the experiences and reactions realistic, while adding his dose of humor. (The first chapter never fails to include Peter’s trademark bathroom humor).

The multiple perspectives are a fun device that will make students relate to this series even more. Each character has unique personality, passions, and struggles. Students may relate to one character, or see themselves as a combination of multiple characters. Looking back at my time in school, I relate most to Danielle (she’s the only one without a crush). It’s always a treat to hear the voice of seven narrators, who all view the world differently. I hope there is a fourth book in the making!

Mr. E Review 🐘:  This book has something for everyone to relate to, even an elephant. I think I identified most with Jessica, a future writer, and Luke, a scientist. However, once in a while I find myself cracking wise like Peter or displaying a fondness toward elephant calves, like Jeffrey and his little brother!
